30,000 People Fall for Computer Tan Hoax

Last week we posted a link to a website called Computer Tan, a fake website setup by a UK skin cancer charity called Skcin. This site promised people a suntan from nothing more than the heat rays from their PC monitors while they type. You can feel “tan-tastic!”
But the 30,000 people who were gullible enough to click on the link for more information were instead confronted with pictures of people with tumors and were given statistics and facts on the condition.
All in all, this is a pretty slick, savvy and humorous marketing campaign and since it managed to hit the news headlines in the UK, it seems to have done the trick. It’s hard to believe though that anyone seriously thought that they were going to get a suntan from their PC monitor! (continue reading…)
Computer Tan

Looking for a quick way to get a tan but can’t find time off work? Look no further than Computer Tan. This revolutionary new technology allows you to get a natural and healthy looking tan from simply sitting in from of a computer. No more trips to the tanning salon!
If only it was that simple! Computer Tan is a fake website, though to the untrained eye it might look real. If you go through the whole site, you’ll see it’s just a PSA (Public Service Announcement) about skin cancer and harmful UV rays. The agceny who put this site together has really done a good job of making this “new technology” real. That is, until you get to the “tanning” part which is a simple flash animation of tanning lights.
